Restricting Court Access to the National Courts Building Through August 31, 2021

The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Federal Claims have entered a new joint order revising the restrictions and rules concerning access to the National Courts Building complex in Washington, D.C., effective July 31, 2021.  Courthouse access will continue to be limited to court staff and litigants, witnesses, and any other parties who will be physically present in the courthouse because of their participation in a scheduled hearing that day.  Additional requests for access will still be handled on a case-by-case basis when submitted in writing at least 24 hours ahead of time.  The full administrative order is available on the court’s website (pdf) and modifies the court’s prior May 22, 2021 order (pdf).

Requests for access relating to Federal Circuit business or spaces within the National Courts Building may be submitted in writing to the Circuit Executive’s Office at FSO_helpdesk@cafc.uscourts.gov.  These restrictions will remain in effect through August 31, 2021, unless modified sooner.

Notice of Modifications to Court Operations and New Protocols for In-Person Arguments

June 22, 2021

Starting with the September 2021 court sitting, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will resume in-person arguments and has issued necessary protocols that will govern appearances for that sitting and future sittings until further notice.  These Protocols for In-Person Argument (pdf), as well as a new administrative order (pdf) implementing these changes, are available on the court’s website. 

Pursuant to Administrative Order 2021-10 (pdf), the Clerk’s Office gives notice that non-electronic filings and materials may be submitted through the U.S. Postal Service or third-party commercial carriers, or they may be deposited in the night drop box on H Street, N.W.  In-person filings inside the courthouse remain unavailable. See Administrative Order 2021-09 (pdf).

2022 Federal Circuit Judicial Conference

June 15, 2021

The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will hold its next Judicial Conference on Friday, April 1, 2022 at the JW Marriott Washington, D.C. Morning sessions will include moderated panels composed of judges from the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and judges and officials from tribunals within the Federal Circuit’s jurisdiction.

Appointment of New Advisory Council Members

May 24, 2021

Chief Judge Kimberly A. Moore has appointed the following new members to the Advisory Council for the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit: Deanne Maynard (Chair), Claudia Burke, Alexander Canizares, Adam Keser, Monica Lateef, Melissa Patterson, and Katherine Smith.  These appointments are for terms of three years and are effective May 22, 2021.  The full announcement is available on the court’s website (pdf). Notice of Modified Access Restrictions for the National Courts Building Through June 30, 2021

The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Federal Claims have entered a new joint order modifying public access restrictions to the National Courts Building complex in Washington, D.C.  Effective May 24, 2021, courthouse access is now limited to court staff and litigants, witnesses, and any other parties who will be physically present in the courthouse because of their participation in a scheduled hearing that day.  Additional requests for access will still be handled on a case-by-case basis when submitted in writing at least 24 hours ahead of time.  The order further provides for health and safety protocols for individuals while in the courthouse.  The full administrative order is available on the court’s website (pdf).

Requests for access relating to Federal Circuit business or spaces within the National Courts Building may be submitted in writing to the Circuit Executive’s Office at FSO_helpdesk@cafc.uscourts.gov.  These restrictions will remain in effect through June 30, 2021, unless modified sooner.

Notice of Continued Extension of Access Restrictions for the National Courts Building

The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Federal Claims have entered a new joint order extending their prior administrative order of June 26, 2020, concerning access to the National Courts Building complex in Washington, D.C. Effective immediately, building access will continue to remain limited to court staff through May 31, 2021; however, requests for access will still be handled on a case-by-case basis when submitted in writing at least 24 hours ahead of time. Public Advisory for Live Audio Feed of Court Sessions

March 29, 2021

Following last month’s pilot program, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will offer live audio streaming of all arguments on the court’s YouTube channel (external).  Beginning with the April 2021 session, all scheduled arguments will be available through this channel and the court will no longer provide teleconference numbers for public access.  The court anticipates that all oral arguments will be audio streamed online while the courthouse remains closed to the public in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recordings of all arguments will continue to be available on the court’s website after the conclusion of arguments each day.
