Announcements in 2017

The Library and the Clerk’s Office phone service and customer service counter in the National Courts Building will be closed on Thursday, December 14, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. This closure does not affect electronic filing.

An amendment to Rule 4 of the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure went into effect on December 1, 2017. This technical amendment restored prior language to Rule 4(a) that was inadvertently deleted in 2009, and no related or conforming amendment was needed to the Federal Circuit Rules. An updated version of the court’s Rules of Practice incorporating this amendment is available on the court’s website.

In the spring of 2018, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will go live on the next generation of the national case management and electronic case filing system, NextGen CM/ECF. Additional information and instructions on how to begin preparing for NextGen CM/ECF are available here.

On November 13, 2017, the Supreme Court’s electronic filing system will begin operation.  While paper will remain the official form of filing as under existing practice, parties represented by counsel will also be required to submit most documents through the new electronic filing system.  Attorneys who expect to file documents electronically will need to register in advance for the system.  Additional information is available at

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will be closed on the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 24, 2017. Please see the administrative closing order here. For purposes of computation of time and motions to enlarge time under Fed. R. App. P. 26 and Fed. Cir. R. 26, November 24th will be considered a “legal holiday.”
